General abstract:
The papers in this panel will explore the ways pragmatist and related concepts of experience inform our understanding or art and issues in aesthetics. The classic illustration of the idea is the development of John Dewey's transactional understanding of experience in Art as Experience. Another relevant illustration is Justus Buchler's conception of judgment and his application of it to a theory of poetry in The Main of Light. The four papers in the panel will develop aspects of these and related approaches to experience, art, and aesthetics.
